What Healthy Start Fixes
That Braces Can't

When parents bring a child to our Orlando office worried about crooked teeth, they expect a conversation about braces someday. What they often get instead is a conversation about breathing — because crowded teeth are frequently a visible symptom of something more important: an underdeveloped jaw and a compromised airway.

Crooked teeth are a symptom, not the problem

Sleep-disordered breathing affects over 40 million children, and 9 out of 10 children show at least one symptom. When a child's airway is narrow, sleep is interrupted and oxygen to the developing brain is reduced — night after night. Braces at age 13 can straighten the teeth, but they do nothing for the airway, the sleep, or the growth pattern that caused the crowding in the first place.

What is Healthy Start?

Healthy Start® is an FDA-cleared, American-made appliance system for children ages 2–12. It's soft, flexible, BPA-free, and worn mostly during sleep. Rather than forcing teeth into position, it gently guides the growth of the jaw and airway while your child is still developing — a genuinely holistic approach: better health and breathing first, with straighter teeth as the added benefit.

I wouldn't recommend anything to you that I wouldn't to my own family. Healthy Start is life changing — literally.

That quote is mine. As a dentist and a parent, I discovered Healthy Start while searching for answers for my own two-year-old. It's now one of the three things our practice is best known for across Orlando, Winter Park, and Windermere.

Signs every parent should know

  • Snoring or noisy breathing
  • Mouth breathing — during sleep or at rest
  • Crowded, crooked, or overlapping teeth
  • Restless sleep, nightmares, or frequent waking
  • Difficulty focusing, or ADD/ADHD-like behavior
  • Bedwetting beyond the expected age
  • Dark circles under the eyes; waking up tired
  • A recessed or underdeveloped jaw

Two or more of these? It's worth an evaluation. At Boesch Dental, we screen every child's airway at every visit — it's built into how we practice.

Why earlier is better

Between ages 2 and 6, the jaw and airway are at their most responsive. Gentle guidance now can mean a lifetime of nasal breathing, deep sleep, and often no braces at all. Wait until the teen years, and the correction window has largely closed — treatment becomes about managing symptoms rather than fixing causes.

What an evaluation looks like

Dr. Shah — who practiced pediatric dentistry in India before completing dental school in the U.S. — and I evaluate your child's airway, jaw development, teeth, and growth in one warm, child-friendly visit. If Healthy Start is a fit, we'll explain the phases and costs clearly. If it isn't, we'll tell you that too.
